Tea still mints Assam brands — if you leave the auction

The Guwahati Tea Auction Centre moves staggering volume. The startups worth watching sell around it, not through it.

Assam’s tea story is usually told in kilograms. The auction in Dispur is one of the largest CTC hubs on earth. That is a commodity machine. It is not a brand machine. The founders who are interesting right now treat the garden as a supply base and the internet as the storefront.

Garden-direct D2C has the same problems as any consumer brand: CAC, repeats, and a story that is not “we are from Assam.” The ones that work pick a ritual (morning pour, gifting, office caddies) and a quality claim you can taste. The ones that stall sell “authentic Assam tea” to people who already have a tin.

This is also where the rest of the stack shows up: logistics out of Dibrugarh and Jorhat, packaging that does not die in the monsoon, and payments that work for a planter who is not on Stripe. The digest follows those adjacent companies as closely as the tea brands themselves.
